I could use some help!
We're having a Super Bowl party again this year. Last year we had food e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e! You can go here to see pics from last year. Anyway, this year I've decided to break down and use the dining room so all the food can be in one place. Our dining room is very formal and we don't use it very often. Seriously, we only use it for holidays and special occassions. (We're actually using it tomorrow night though for my friend Jeanette's birthday party.) And I think it's just too formal for the Super Bowl party, but necessary this year I think. There will be just too many people here and we need more counter space at the bar and in the kitchen for people to sit their plates and drinks and elbows when they lean in.
~~~~~~
Here's my problem, how should I decorate it?
~~~~~~
I don't like tablecloths...never have...but I've decided I must protect my table with this crowd. I spent a lot of time today shopping for one as well as the table protector liner. My table is really long...it seats 12-14 people, so I had a devil of a time finding one I liked that would fit my table. Of course, the one I liked the best was the most expensive of the bunch...by $25.00. sigh!
~~~~~~
So here's your assignment if you choose to help....what kind of centerpiece should I do. I want it to be Super Bowl-ish, but still do justice to the room. Plus, I'd love to do something on my front door and some things on the wet bar area.
Any ideas?
~~~~~~
Below are photos I took tonight of my dining room.

Girl... I will giv eit some thought, I just want to COME! What fun!
Ok Maxine ... I'm not a sports fan by any means, but you could print out the team logos and past them on a piece of poster board with VS between them. If you can get some pom poms from a party store, put those on there too. That can be for your front door decoration.
Then, try and get a football cake and put fake grass around it so the ball looks like it's lying in the grass. Maybe football picks for fruit and cheese ... they also look good in drinks with olives or fruit on them.
Other than that, I think the balloons you had last time were great. Yes, protect your dining room table ... that's a must.
Sorry I couldn't be of further help. xxoo
I am sooooo sorry, I cannot be of any help until I recover from the gorgeosity of your dining room that is fit for royalty!!!! FABULOUS!!!
M ^..^
OK you asked.
I would lose the chairs. Then go to the fabric store and buy yards and yards and yards of burlap. Cut it and fray the ends. Use it to cover your tables, on the bar, anything that needs covering. Get an old football and carefully slice a hole into it...use an assortment of balloons in the team colors. You may have to tape the balloons to the bottom of the inside of the ball. Maybe use tissue paper to conceal opening in ball. Then...go to the grocery store and get as many brown paper sacks as you will need. Turn these inside out (if they have writing on them). Then roll down the tops untill you have the size container you need. Great for chips and pretzels, etc. If the food is messy, use the disposable tin casserole dishes that you can buy at grocery store...they have a clear plastic lid. Set them dowm inside one of the big grocery bags and roll down as needed. Go to Target and get the flour sack dish towels in the beige color to use as napkins. You can also make a drink coozie, by wrapping a strip of burlap around a glass and securing with double stick tape.
Use crayons to write on paper sacks if necessary. The best thing about all this is at the end of the night, it all gets thrown away. You of course could add confetti all along and amidst the serving table. If you are feeling very 'Martha', you can make your own confetti by punching out designs in the brown bags. Martha has a line of hole punches, by the way. I would make a big banner to hang using a pennant as a pattern. Just cut the large triangles from the burlap...print the letters directly on it, then punch 2 holes at the top and thread it through a length of twine. Leave enough at the end to tie it wherever you want it. Use the twine also to tie your napkins and utensils. I would buy the cardboard paper plates...so that you could punch 2 holes in them and tie a cute football shape, maybe with a timely quote on it.
You can also buy smaller bags like lunch bags at grocery store.
That's all I can come up with right now...maybe this is too informal, but that's the kind of decorating I do.
Have fun!
Since Valentines is so near you could go with some of that and it would fit with the room. As for the centerpiece if you go only with the football theme I woud use a football as a vase for the flowers and small ones with the names of your gust on them to take and remember the party. I am afraid I am not much help. LOL Have a Blessed week..m.
Protect the table with runners in the team's colors. You could use towels if you didn't find runners. Balloons in the team colors would look great, too, since you have high ceilings. How about a football and some poms, too? I think you can go all out football, even if your dining room is formal. I really do!
You could do the table in a green felt, with white stripes for a "field". Place a football in the center with poms around it... You could make a copy of the Lombardi trophy using a crystal candlestick and a football you spray paint silver...
I can't wait to see what you come up with!
Can you use your sons football game to cover the table?? :p
I agree, fabric to cover the table in the teams colors would be best. And with those high ceilings, balloon, balloons, balloons! Real footballs would be cute, but just to to a local party center, they will have tons of serving dishes,etc.. and you can reuse the plastic ones again next year.
Make sure you have outlets for warming trays, crockpots, etc. Are people bringing dishes to share? Or just you providing it?
One fun thing our friends have done for years is provide the mardi gras type beads in the two team colors, like red and white for the Cardinals and whatever other colors it is for the other team :d . That way your can "declare" your allegience and rivalry is fun!
I'm sure the party store would have the little confetti to sprinkle on the table too. And pom poms, cute idea!
Depends on how much money and time you want to spend on decorating. You could get sod and cover your table with it and use that to hold the food dishes with other decorations. Use mini footballs to write the name of the dishes on them so everyone knows what they are eating. Or if it's a sit down use them for name tags.
You could make a serving piece out of a football. Glue it to a plate and then glue another plate on top and use it as a serving platter.
Get some tiny plastic footballs or even marbles in the teams colors and put them in a clear vase, fill with water and add flowers.
You can get a big cake for the dessert in the shape of a football and use that as the center piece until you cut it.
If you keep the chairs in there you could cover with the colors of the teams, tshirts with the teams names or jersy shirts.
There is so much you could do...if you want to spend the time and/or money.
Have fun and be sure to post what you came up with.
Hugs,
Joanne
I'm useless when it comes to decorating for anything sports related. Looks like you've had some wonderful ideas already in previous comments. Love the burlap idea! Your dining room is gorgeous. It looks as big as my entire apartment! LOL Your Super Bowl photos from last year made me drool. My son is having a small get-together for the BIG day and we'll enjoy it with friends, family, and lots of food. xoxo
Hi Kat, First of all, let me say your dining is absolutely gorgeous!!! What a beautiful room! :)
It sounds like you already have some wonderful ideas in the comments already! I've gotten some ideas myself reading what some of these talented ladies wrote. I like the idea of the burlap. I've used it before and it has such a nice effect on a tablesetting. My ideas...use a neutral tablecloth, some shade of tan/brown/beige, and use the burlap scrunched on top of the table. To give your table more visual interest, put a few bowls or anything you can use as a riser, underneath the burlap in different places...graduating from the center of the table UNDER the burlap, and then place your decorative bowls with food on top of them. Just a few here and there, so the table won't look flat! Does that make sense? LOL! I'm not good at relaying my thoughts! If you want to keep the elegant look of your room, but make it fun, use your beautiful candlesticks with brown candles (football color "smiles"), that you don't mind lighting. Then use the brown bowl that I saw in your pic from last year, that is shaped like a football, and make a center arrangement out of it, with the candlesticks placed on each side like in your DR pic, now. Women always love flowers, even if paired with football...and men don't care either way...LOL! So I would use the floral tape and make a grid across the football shaped bowl, (taping it off), and get flowers from your local grocerier, and maybe use greenery from your yard, and stick them in between the grid, in the bowl. Keep the flowers short, not much taller than the bowl. You could even stick a few flag of the teams in the arrangement. If you don't won't to use your candlesticks and for something on the sidechest in the room....take a can of vegetables/soup, and tissue paper...put the can in the middle of the tissue paper, and then pull it up around the middle (gathered up like a package). Tie off with gift ribbon of the team colors, and them tie balloons like you had last year onto it. Just serves as a pretty weight! :) One more thing, use paper gift filler (scrunched up streamer looking stuff), it's stringy and looks like strips of accordian...sprinkle it here and there between your bowls, and maybe some team confetti. The package filler gives the confetti depth too! :) ...well that is about all of my suggestions! :) Hope the help a little!
Looks like ya'll had a great time last year! HAVE FUN! ~hugs, Rhonda
Hey Kat! You got some really good suggestions, I see. Where I'm from, we only decorate with black and gold. I LOVE the green felt idea for your table with white strips to similate the field. Pom poms in team colors are festive...I put a few together in vases. You can also use pom poms in a wreath, grapevine or otherwise, for a door ornament. Good luck!
I would probably ask my florist to help with a centerpiece for the dining room table. Since the DR is formal, I would want a fresh flower arrrangement - but maybe with Super Bowl team colors. Tell the florist it has to be formal for the DR, but fun for the party - :-) That could be enjoyed long after the party. {My home is a NO CONFETTI ZONE - hehe} You could make some small pennants on sticks {craft store} to stick into the flower arrangement. That would be cute, but not too cutesy. Then I would use my cups, plates, napkins, koozies, etc. for most of my decorations. You could have balloons in the TV rooms. I would try to put my orders in for things early in the week though as these places will get busy, busy, busy.
Do y'all ever do a fun board where everyone puts in a dollar and gets two numbers??? Then you pay the winners at the end of each quarter or half?? If you want more info on that, email me. It is always fun to watch how excited everyone gets over that. When hubby and I used to do a Super Bowl Party, we always had one.
I would probably decorate a grapevine wreath with appropro things for the front door just for fun! Again, I might enlist professional help. :-) or copycat something I have seen online, etc.
Perhaps you could try trays of wheatgrass. It's very classy, yet conveys the turf look.
Oh gosh Kat, I don't know..
Your dining room is SO incredibly beautiful!! Your table will be filled with tons and tons of food, I'm sure, so why not just use a huge glass bowl of some kind in the middle, elevated and just fill it with tall breads, like the kind we'd cut length wise for subs... gorgeous breads of different heights and textures?
Now the important thing is:
What can I bring and what time should I be there?
;-)
Love,
Kim
Hello Kat,
What's your address again :) LOL! I just know what every you do I would love to be there! Alas, I must stay in Minnesota and work but I will be thinking of you and watching for your post about the fun you have! :)
I love the burlap idea, rather than a table cloth. You have some really great ideas, already. I'm a tad late getting over here, again. I was here around 4AM and didn't leave a comment.
Rhonda's idea of some sort of elevation for the center of the table is wonderful. Since no one will actually be sitting at the table, you could do an over the top football related centerpiece.
Can't wait to see what you decide! Former St Louis Football Cardinals with former St Louis Rams Quarterback Warner will be playing this year!!
Hey, Kat, wow you've got some great suggestions here. I don't think I can top any of them. Yep, wish we could just drive down there & be there too, I'm sure it's gonna be a fun SB par-tay! Love Tonya's idea for casual and yes, you must protect that table. You have one of the most gorgeous DR's I've ever seen for sure. Your guests won't care about all the frufru, they'll just be glad to be there & enjoy all the food.
I'm not all that creative with tablescapes!
I was going to say put lots of red around for the Cardinals. lol
Your home is so beautiful. Red doesn't seem like the best color for you to decorate with. Still - I say "Go Red".
I have no doubt that whatever you do will be fantastic.
Hugs,
Charlotte
Tonja's idea was great. I would take it one step further. Put height in the center of the table under the burlap or green grass covering (whatever you use.) The center of the table could be as high as two feet and at varying levels. On those slopes you could display food. Put boxes underneath for the height. Have fun!
Could those beams be anymore FABULOUS! Here's a link to some great ideas for a fun snack table that we found: http://entertaining.about.com/od/superbowl/a/superbowlsnktbl.htm
Have a wonderful Sunday!
smiles, kari & kijsa
Hey Kat; Wow so many great ideas to choose from. But I must agree with some of Joanne's ideas, I love the pom poms for the front door. I would use some balloons on each side of your front door in your teams colors. I love the idea of the mini footballs with everyone's name on them. The burlap sounds like a great for the protecting your beautiful table. Use a football for your center piece with some flowers and some penitents with the team logo. use different height's for the food. and some dish towel's in the team colors for messy hands. I would move your beautiful chairs so every one can move around the table freely. With such high ceiling's just let some balloons float around. And way what every you choose to do it will be great and fun for every one. Oh you can get disposable cameras put in a bowl and have every one take photos of the party to keep..
I do love your DR. it is just beautiful. have fun. Please take photos so we can all see how you decorated.
Hugs;
Alaura
ps sorry it is a long comment..lol
GASP! I have seen photos of your beautiful dining room before but never of that rustic ceiling with the chandelier! LOVE IT! I'm sure you'll make it look very super-bowlish but I'm no help my dear!
HI Kat, sorry I didn't get over here sooner. You sure got some great ideas. My simple idea would be to use team colored balloons here & there.
Your home is beautiful! I'm sure your decorations will be wonderful!
Hugs, DebraK
Kat- First of all your dining room is stunning. I really love the exposed beams... so much character in this room. You are a brave soul, bc I would not allow men in that room! ha :). I am thinking sod would be really cool and fresh flowers. I would like to see some footballs all around. What about some team banners to hang from the beams? I am not good at anything sports related. :( But, I have no doubt it will be fabulous! Good luck sweet friend.
ummmm...what wonderful ideas for your party. Love the burlap idea for the table and LOVE LOVE LOVE Daisy Cottage Kim's idea of tall breads of all kinds in the center of the table. I am going to use that idea, myself.....
Have fun with it...
