What is this UFO - unidentified furry object? It was cute, but we couldn't figure out what it was. Any ideas? Mom, Sherry and I worked in the yard today planting some perrenials Mom brought with her and filling the bird feeders and cleaning out the bird bath. Some of the bird seed fell on the ground. When we moved to work in another area, Mom spotted this little guy munching away on the seeds we dropped. He wasn't too afraid of us...but EEK!
I don't like spiders or mice. It didn't have much of a tail and it's ears were not pink, so we're thinking it might not be a mouse. What do you think? Hey, whatever it is, I just don't want it in my house!!!!!!!!!
~~~~~~
We accomplished a lot, but we still played lots of games today and had two friends over for lunch.
I don't know what it is but I don't like it. I don't like spiders or mice either. Rats are even worse. The chicken foot game looks like fun. I like dominoes.
That is just the short-tail, pink-ear, Destin Doo Dah. Not to worry...he prefers the outside. However...since his favorite food is birdseed...he may be back loking for more. The STPEDDD never forgets where he found tasty treats. That's why you don't see many of them. They hang around...like, forever...once they find a place they like.
The only thing that scares them off are pink, plastic flamingo yard ornaments. You should go to the nearest Dollar Store and get you at least 3 dozen of the things. Wait until there is a full moon. It is said that is when he will travel home to 'visit the missus' if you catch my drift. Strike now with the flammingos...before he comes back. He should return in 6 1/2 minutes exactly, so work fast! Place the flamingos in a continuous line around the property line. Then fill in the area on the ground between each flamingo with ground up walnut shells. I know, where can you find walnuts this time of the year...and who likes to shell them? But this is a must...do not leave any of the walnut meat in the shell. His next fav food is walnut meat. And instead of scaring him off...he'll think you laid out a grand buffet!
I hope this works out for you...let me know if I can be of any more help.
Above information on the STPEDDD is from the book, "Little Known Creatures in the Land of Paradise." Published by Hoo Hah Publishing...2006. Author T.T. Owens.
He looks kinda sorta like a muskrat, which I had never seen until one showed up in our pond a few weeks ago. But, that's a very unscientific, uneducated observation. I'm curious to see what others think. (But I think Tonja may be on to something!)
That is a FLORIDA SALT MARSH VOLE. This is an endangered species. There is also a MEADOW VOLE in Florida.
It is a small, short-tailed rodent with blunt head and short ears. This specific vole is black-brown on its back and dark gray on its sides. It is closely related to a sub-specie of the Meadow Vole, but can be distinguished by its larger size, darker color, and relatively small ears. The voles create runways in tall grass and are rarely seen. (BUT you got a picture of it!)
Voles are excellent swimmers and can cling to vegetation during storms. (So flooding your yard will not work!)
I give credit to my husband, who is from Arkansas, but an Oklahoma University graduate. Even us 'Okies' know our varmints!
I agree that it may be a salt marsh vole.If it is it is very rare and almost extinct.I would call the Florida Wildlife Dept. and inform them of this sighting. Thank you for sharing this with us.I really enjoy hunting and being in the outdoors.
Wouldn't you know that you have an endangered vole in your yard. I'd put out those pink flamincos that Tonja mentioned right away... before Miss Daisy decides she want's a vole snack.
What a cute little creature.
I was hoping to see what some others thought because I am clueless. It almost looks like someones gerbil or hamster gone wild.
Smiles!
I don't have a clue but I like the middle photo where he looks like he is looking right at your camera.
I thought it might be what they call a ground squirrel. I think he is so cute as long as he does not get to close.LOL.....Hugs
Okay, that Tonja has outdone herself again. Hysterical!!!
Like Jennifer, I was hoping someone else would have an idea, because I don't know! It does have the look of a wild gerbil!
Your days are full of fun!
