I was out running errands this afternoon (George says when I say that he knows it means shopping...which means spending - HA). I stopped by Target to pick up a few items. I grabbed a jar of dry roasted peanuts along with quite a few other items. At the register, I also picked up a cold bottle of Coke Zero. When I got to the car, I decided that some peanuts and a coke were just what I needed to fuel me for more errands...or spending as George would say. LOL
And that's when the memories came flooding back....
When I was a little girl I remember watching television (we called it that waaaaay back then...not TV...television) with my grandparents. I'm pretty sure they were the only ones on their block who owned a television. It looked nothing like our TVs of today. It was a BIG old thing...and I mean BIG! Remember those? Anyway, there was a small neighborhood grocery on the corner across the street. The kind that had a swinging screen door on it. And wood floors. And big glass jars on the counter with large flat cookies in them. And the store owner and his wife knew everyone by name. All of us kids (my sisters and cousins) used to love to go to that store. Anyway, I remember walking over to the store with my Granddaddy to get an RC cola and a bag of peanuts. Remember RC cola...aka Royal Crown colas? We would pour the bag of peanuts into the bottle of RC cola and then take sips...getting some peanuts along with each sip of the drink. Yum...a little salty with the sweet!
Today when I sat in my car and ate some peanuts and drank my soda, the memories came flooding back. Such an innocent and sweet time!
Isn't it funny/weird how something so small can bring forth a memory from years ago?
The above photo is an old one of my grandparents. Isn't it a sweet photo? I love it.
I loved my grandparents and I sure do miss them.

Hugs from the beach!

What a sweet picture!!! Yes, I sure do miss my Grandparents too. All of mine are deceased. I have so many wonderful memories of great times spent with my Grandparents many years ago. Love & blessings from NC!
That is a great picture! I enjoyed your memories too. I must say that peanuts and RC doesn't sound good to me. In your defense, I don't like peanuts plain either. :)
What a sweet picture! And what struck me is how NICE they are dressed, not this grubby "I don't care what people think" look of today. What nice memories you have of your grandparents!
I love when that happens. Who knew that when we were doing those things these days would come. Now you have me wanting some lol. I am so hooked on Coke Zero!
when I was little Papaw would go to the store and I rode too. We also got RC,but in tut on the counter was the big box of cheese and he would have it sliced( In Louisiana we call it rat cheese hehe) guess why? I loved the crackers and cheese and my RC,but on the other hand when we were at home we had a little store we walked to. As we walked we picked up bottles to turn in for money. I always got a little coke and peanuts to put in them! WONDERFUL
Mari doesn't know what she is missing! Ice cold (from the iced cooler) RC cola and peanuts~~ a moment!
I have been going through shoe boxes of old photos and told Holly that thoses photos are our 'real inheritance'. Precious memories.
What a sweet memory. I remember stores like that and when you mentioned RC cola that reminded me of this past weekend, I was telling a story of when we were little we would have a Moon Pie and an RC cola. lol I also poured my peanuts in my cola. I still like the cola and the peanuts but the moon pie, not so much. :)
Hugs,
Patty
Precious memory and picture!
I remember my very first coke; it was a little bottle and I thought it was the best thing I'd ever had. I was five and with my uncle; I've been "addicted" ever since. hahaha
Have a wonderful day, Kat! ((hugs))
P.S. YES, peanuts in the bottle! :)
In some ways those years of our youth and the times in general back then were full of innocense. We were lucky to experience a time like that. Your memories of your grandparents are really sweet. We had a grocery store like that on our corner. My grandma would send me to the store and to pay she'd say "Just tell them to put it on the tab." (A running bill and people would pay at the end or beginning of the month when they'd get paid. People sure were trusting. Good memories. Thanks Kat.
This brought back sweet memories for me too, Kat. Thanks for the memories.
Hugs,
Charlotte
I too remember the iced cold RC cola with salty peanuts....Yummo
Nowadays we take out grandchildren to a restaurant (term used loosely) in Fort Wayne called Coney Island, they have a sign that reads " Our buns are steamed" and under that it says since 1917! They are still in the same NARROW building with almost everything original..galvanized-topped tables with ice cream parlor type chairs, creaky wooden floor, luncheon counter w stools, etc...I even tease that the haven't cleaned the chili pot since opening, just keep adding the ingredients...My husband's great-grandfather took his grandfather, and every child in our family takes part in this "rite of passage" as soon as they have teeth enough for hot dogs ...what do the kids enjoy most???...COKE in a bottle !!!!!
Awwww..sweet memories...thanks for taking us back to the simpler days..
I must say, my mom and Mamaw always put peanuts in their coke bottles, but I never have. I think I should try it. You make it sound so good.
Love the picture of your grandparents. My Mamaw JUST died four years ago. She was 90 and still driving up until a few weeks before she died. My other Grandmother is STILL living and doing great....Goes out to eat, etc. She is 94. We have longevity in our family!
Haven't thought of peanuts in my cola for a long time. Love the pic of your grandparents.
Oh my word, do I remember that...mmmmmmmm...so good. I want one now. Memories are so precious to me, my grandparents are gone too, I miss them so. I love the picture of yours. Blessings, Debbie
I do remember RC Cola! And those big old TV's....black and white, no color!
We put peanuts in a bottle of Dr Pepper. You remember those little bottles? The Dr Pepper was made with pure cane sugar. Nothing at all like the taste of Dr Pepper today.
I love the photo of your grandparents!
We would put them in a bottle of REAL COKE! Nothing tastes quite like that, does it? I always preferred Dr. Pepper, though...still do. We had one of those stores with the glass jars right down the road from me!
I've never tried peanuts in my Coke..sounds good though. How sweet that those two things brought back such great memories. I love it when that happens to me too!
Connie
P.S. How ironic...had a coke out of the bottle last night at a friends house and it tasted soooo good! It was made with pure cane sugar...
We put them in coke too! Of course, the only time we got to have coke is when daddy would come home with a case in his truck.....given to him by someone at the coke plant which was (still is) next door to his business. Those were exciting days!
I had peanuts in my RC Cola. My grandparents taught me that! My grandmother used to work in a soda fountain in my home town. I remember cherry cokes and vanilla cokes!
That must be a southern thing. I have never even heard of that combination! But I do love salty and sweet things together. Might have to try it!
I really don't remember having store-bought soda as a kid. We made our own root beer in the summer time. And homemade ice cream. The best root beer floats ever.
Of course I remember RC cola! Doesn't everyone? Well, everyone over the age of 50. My grandma used to take me to the "Second hand store" in search of "vintage" items. Talk about a bargain hunter...she was the best!
I loved your little walk down memory lane. It is funny how a peanut can bring back so many memories.
Hi Kat....
I took a few days off from blogging and am catching up...
Is RC and peanuts a Southern thing ??? I have never heard of it...never had an RC but I sure remember Coke in a glass bottle, oh my the BEST !! I remember getting on my bike and riding down to the Shell gas station where they had a machine with the glass top that you rolled back to reach in and get your tonic, with the bottle opener on the side, although my basket on my bike could open tonic bottles...LOL I loved that bike, and those monster TV's yes in deed I remember them ....
Loved my Mum and Grampie.... Grammie & Gramps too, I had two sets of wonderful Grandparents...I was so lucky :)
Nice post Kat...
Kathy :)
Ahhh, Raffields Grocery where the screen door was stenciled with the Colonial Bread logo. Coke and peanuts went together and an RC and a Moon Pie. The RC Bottling Company was directly across the street! I didn't need money back then. My parents had an account!
Your post brought memories to me too. Isn't it fun to have such loving memories of grandparents? I can hear the screen door at our little family/local market banging shut and I can see the bread aisle and also the butcher with the saw dust on the floor and an old fashion scale. Seem like yesterday. I better not blink as time seems to be flying way to quickly and I am enjoying my ride thru life!
Joyce
Lawsy girl, that's proof you were raised in the south!!! My daddy taught me how to pour peanuts into my RC!!
What a nice post Kat! And what a sweet photo! I love it when I remember things out of the blue, especially sweet memories! Hope you have a great weekend!!
That is a sweet picture. I love old pictures of family members. We used to put our peanuts in our Dr. Pepper. It's really tasty!!
Those were sweet memories! And yes I remember RC cola, and television too. Do you remember when Mtn. Dew came in green bottles with a hillbilly on it?
There must be something in the air about peanuts and coke lately as I've read that with other bloggers too!!
Ulrike
What a precious pic! I am lucky bc I too remember those times. My mother is from a small town, and it used to be this way. I can still hear that door snap back shut behind me. And the floor creeked.....and indeed peanuts in RC! YUM!
