Today we had a guest speaker, Melinda Mayton, from The Lighthouse (a seaside retreat for children living with cancer and their families). This program is amazing. Melinda was a pediatric oncology nurse and witnessed the devastation that childhood cancer brings to the entire family – the stress on relationships, emotions, finances and spirituality. Inspired to help reconnect these families and renew lives, she founded The Lighthouse Family Retreat in December 1999. One of the families who was helped in the past also came today to speak to us. Very emotional, but so incredible. Now this family volunteers with the program.

That would have been so touching. We had a little girl at our school who begain battling cancer in 2nd grade. It was so difficult to watch the effects of the cancer and the treatments on her. She's in 7th grade now at another school and doing fine, praise God.
wow, shouldn't we all serve as lighthouses to the lost and hurting!? Really puts things in perspective, doesn't it?!
I haven't blogged about it yet, but my oldest son was diagnosed with cancer of the adrenal gland when he was 3 years old. For the next 10 years it was hospitals and doctors. He went to a camp for cancer patients in Birmingham for several summers and it was wonderful. It was associated with Children's Hospital of Alabama. People who give of their time and talents to share fun and hope to these children are surely some of God's choicest. Angels among us.
